Many rare diseases manifest in childhood, resulting in a shorter lifespan and a dependence on care throughout the patient's life, causing significant suffering for the patients and their families. Patients affected by rare diseases often have to endure a "diagnostic odyssey" for years before they receive the correct diagnosis, if that ever happens. Most rare diseases lack effective treatments, which represents a huge unmet medical need. Research and innovation in the EU are crucial to accelerate the discovery and development of new therapies.
