5 tips to survive your first Hot Yoga class

Most people are afraid to try new things because they feel unprepared or don't know what to expect.
Here are 5 tips to help you survive your first Hot Yoga class so you can feel confident and prepared.

Hydration – it is important to be hydrated when you come to class. During hot yoga, people sweat and can lose a lot of water from the body. It is important to keep the body hydrated to prevent dizziness and light-headedness. Try to drink at least 1-2 liters of water the day before you go to yoga (and after class to help replenish and stay hydrated), but avoid drinking water right before class, you won't feel good!

Electrolytes – Electrolytes are essential for the proper functioning of our cells and organs. If you are deficient in electrolytes, it can cause an imbalance in your body, which can lead to headaches and fatigue. When you sweat, you lose electrolytes, so it is important to replenish them to maintain the proper functioning of your body.

No burritos before class. It just doesn't feel good to eat a full meal right before a yoga class. Some yoga poses compress and flush your internal organs, which can make for a very uncomfortable class.

Bring a towel large enough for your mat. You start sweating. There's nothing worse than being new to yoga and feeling like you're slipping. It takes away from properly performing the pose and can be very frustrating. Bringing a large enough towel will give you the grip you need to stay seated and focus on your poses.

Don't worry about how you look in class. It is very common to be aware that you are in the wrong position, or to feel that people are judging you for not being flexible. This couldn't be further from the truth. If someone is looking around, he or she might be new too and is making sure he or she has the right posture, just like you!

Now that you know these expert tips, you no longer have to feel unprepared and self-conscious because you'll know what to expect and you'll be able to take your first lesson like a pro!
