I get by far more questions from parents about the Kik Messenger app than any other app. Is it dangerous? What's the danger? Can't my kids just use it to chat and message friends? Can I check what they do with it? How?

Every few months I read a story about a pedophile contacting a child on Kik. It's so bad that a prosecutor in Alabama sent a message home and posted a video on Facebook asking for the app to be taken down immediately.

Is Kik inherently bad? No. I'm sure there are many children who use it responsibly and safely. The problem is who else uses the app. Child predators can first contact someone via another app, website or chat and ask for their 'kid'. This gives them direct access to the child or teen where they can message, chat, exchange contact details and photos and arrange a personal meeting.

Of course, the child or teen may think he has made a new friend his own age. Kik has an age restriction, but it's super easy to lie about your age. A 9 year old can say he is 17 and a 46 year old can say he is 14 and no one knows.

I answer some of the most frequently asked questions about Kik and whether kids and teens should use it.
