Have you heard of AAA, but aren't sure what they offer and whether a membership is worth it? Let's take a look at what you need to know about car club membership.

When I first got my driver's license, my father gave me a membership to AAA. Years later, my wife and I still have a subscription that we have used at least a few times since we joined again. For me, the peace of mind has been well worth the annual fee, but does that apply to everyone? Let's take a look at what you need to know about AAA and its benefits.

The first thing you need to know about AAA is that the price of a membership can actually vary depending on where you live.

One somewhat confusing aspect of AAA is that the organization is actually made up of several smaller clubs that serve certain states and territories. As a result, it's difficult to say exactly how much an annual membership will cost. Additionally, some benefits may vary slightly from area to area.

To give you an idea, my wife and I pay $81 a year for both of us to have memberships in Missouri. The good news is that we can use AAA services during our travels, regardless of our location. Also keep in mind that your plan covers you, not your vehicle. This means you can get help whether you're in your car, rental car or a friend's car.

Then, in addition to the Classic membership, there are also higher-level options that increase your benefits

Although I have only ever been a Classic member, AAA also offers Plus and Premier membership. The main benefit of these higher service levels is the increased towing distance, although other benefits include free fuel, discounts on rental cars and more. Again, prices for these tiers vary by area, but you can expect to pay about 50% more for AAA Plus and about double for AAA Premier compared to the cost of the Classic membership.

Another aspect you may also be aware of is the various discounts you can earn as a member

From hotels to restaurants to even some retailers, there are several places where you can earn a discount as a AAA member. If you look at the AAA site, it looks like you can also find discounts on theme park tickets, movie passes and more. Some of these offers are available in-store, while others may be exclusive. Likewise, for hotels, you should probably book directly through the hotel to guarantee AAA rates rather than shopping through third-party sites. To see if you can take advantage of these discounts, visit your local AAA website.

Finally, before you decide to join AAA, it may be worthwhile to see what other roadside assistance options are already available to you.

While AAA is probably the most well-known roadside assistance provider, there are several other ways to obtain similar services today. Whether it's through your car insurance, in-car plan, or even a rewards credit card or wireless plan, you may already have some type of roadside assistance available to you. Therefore, when trying to determine if AAA is worth it for you, you should see if one of these mediums is an option. Keep in mind that you will also want to compare the benefits and limitations of both. Finally, if you do join AAA, it may also be smart to consider whether you are paying extra for services you no longer need.
