In 1870s Yorkshire, Annie Quaintain (Jessica Raine, Call the Midwife, Agatha Christie's Partners in Crime), a recently widowed mother, is forced to sell her home and possessions to pay off her late husband's debts. Destitute and rejected by society, Annie and her two children move to the Culverdale Valley, where a huge railway viaduct is being built. She sets up a boarding house in Jericho, a lawless slum full of rough and noisy workers.
