The data rate is growing by about 40% every year, and the enormous amount of data exceeds the usual analysis and staffing levels, creating a serious gap in data analytics. To move forward, organizations must transform big data into smart data, which means they must be able to analyze data at scale and quickly use it to provide deeper insights, create new products and differentiate services. New data science is based on velocity (fast-moving data), variety (different types of data), and volume (large amounts of data). This panel will explore what types of approaches and analytical tools are now being used and for what purpose. It will also explore the opportunities, risks and likely developments in the near future as analytics helps us transform the raw materials of big data into valuable smart data.
