Political scientist Ian Bremmer emphasizes the importance of strategic thinking, which he defines as 'thinking about thinking'. It is a process of analyzing macro themes, recognizing patterns and understanding how different factors (at country, company and individual levels) create trade-offs for leaders.

Strategic thinking is not so much about reacting to headlines or current events, but about taking a long-term view, constantly revising and updating your worldview when necessary.

Being open and curious about different perspectives, and being comfortable with the possibility of being wrong, are important parts of the process. Nelson Mandela can be cited as an example of a great strategic thinker because of his ability to put aside personal feelings for the long-term future of a country.

Bbraker is the founder of Eurasia Group, an organization that has used political science for 25 years to help investors and business decision makers better understand how politics affects the risks and opportunities in foreign markets.
