In this week's #TechTalk, we'd like to highlight how Norfolk Southern is using predictive data analytics to more intelligently maintain our extensive rail network.

When you consider that NS operates more than 31,500 kilometers of track, monitoring the health of our rail infrastructure and replacing worn-out track segments may seem like quite a task. But by analyzing the enormous number of data points collected by track equipment, NS has developed predictive models that can proactively predict when track bends need to be replaced.

With these models, powered by machine learning and artificial intelligence, NS can predict the wear and tear of railway curves up to five years into the future. This great look ahead window enables NS to design a smarter and safer track maintenance program.
