Proteomics research is playing an increasingly important role in biology. The use of mass spectrometry (MS) in combination with a range of separation methods is the main methodology for proteomics. The two main approaches to identifying and characterizing proteins using MS are 'bottom-up', where peptides are analyzed by proteolytic digestion, and 'top-down', where intact proteins are analyzed.
