Dr. Mark Soliman is one of many surgeons at the forefront of robotic surgery, a medical technology innovation that aims to reduce the margin of error for invasive surgery, making surgical procedures safer and more precise.

“Once you take these big, imprecise hands of ours, shrink them down and put them into the patient, we can achieve a level of precision that is simply not possible for the human body alone,” said Jonathan Conta, VP of product management at Intuitive, a manufacturer of robotic surgery equipment.

Rather than holding a patient directly in hands, robotic surgery allows Soliman to perform surgery from a remote console that gives him an immersive 3DHD view of the targeted anatomy. The surgeon uses a pair of grips to manipulate a separate robotic surgical system and perform its various surgical maneuvers.

“Lives are at stake when you perform surgery. Any miscalculated move… bad things can happen,” Soliman says, his pause hinting at the debilitating, sometimes fatal consequences of an error during surgery. But Soliman says robotic surgery eases his fears about such potential mistakes. “Every time I work robotically, I feel so much calmer and in complete control of the operation.”
