ABOUT PARKING SENSORS
Parking sensors are proximity sensors for road vehicles designed to warn the driver of obstacles while parking. These systems use electromagnetic ultrasonic sensors.
These systems feature ultrasonic proximity detectors that measure distances to nearby objects via sensors in the rear bumper or visually minimized in adjacent grilles or recesses.
The sensors emit acoustic pulses, where a control unit measures the return interval of each reflected signal and calculates the object distances. The system in turn warns the driver with acoustic tones, where the frequency indicates the distance to the object, faster tones indicate closer proximity and a continuous tone indicates a minimum, predefined distance.
The rear sensors can be activated when reverse gear is engaged and deactivated when another gear is engaged.
Because an ultrasonic system relies on the reflection of sound waves, the system may not detect flat objects or objects that are not large enough to reflect sound, for example a narrow pole or an elongated object placed directly on the vehicle or nearby of an object. Objects with flat surfaces angled from the vertical can deflect returning sound waves away from the sensors, impairing detection. Soft objects with strong sound absorption may also have weaker detection, for example wool or moss.
