As mentioned in Chapter 1, a DBMS supports the creation, use, and maintenance of a database. It consists of different modules, each with their specific functionality, that work together according to a predefined architecture. In this chapter we zoom in on this internal architecture and provide a categorization of DBMSs along different dimensions. The overview of the chapter is simple. We'll start by discussing the components that make up a DBMS. We then provide a classification of DBMSs in terms of data model, degree of concurrent access, architecture, and usage.
