UI/UX designers have been working hard for the past decade to create the best graphical user interface, or GUI. Today, text-based interactions like chatbots are gaining momentum in the product industry, giving companies a new yet reliable way to connect with their customers.

Commonly known as conversational user interfaces (CUI), these bots use machine intelligence to provide users with information or service in a natural and conversational manner. They are used by many big names such as Burberry, AT&T and even the New York Times. How can we create an optimal user experience for chatbots? Here are a few tips.

Number one: give your bot a purpose.
Before your bot can do anything for you, you need to make sure it understands what it needs to do. For example, the KLM airline bot helps passengers arrange travel matters. From booking tickets, rescheduling and assistance with transport to the visa guide for the destination. The bot does it all. You should first consider whether the bot only needs to do one thing or many things in total. Different purposes require different product development strategies.

Number two: give your bot an appropriate personality that is consistent with the company's branding. We all use different tones and jargon in our daily conversations, and that includes the bot. Program your bot to speak in a way that your human customer service representative would use so that it doesn't damage the company's image.

A bot working for the New York Times speaks in a neutral and calm tone, representing the integrity of journalism. A sales bot speaks with passion and joy to inspire purchase. An airline bot speaks to customers in efficient and clear language to help passengers reduce their travel anxiety.
