In anticipation of his latest opus, OH, CANADA, we revisit the films of one of American cinema's most provocative moral philosophers. For more than forty years, Paul Schrader has been exploring the guilty soul of the modern world in a relentless search for existential meaning. Raised in a strict Calvinist household – a strict upbringing that would influence his film philosophy and his study of the “transcendental” styles of directors like Yasujiro Ozu and Robert Bresson – Schrader exploded onto the scene with his screenplay for Martin Scorsese's TAXI DRIVER, a tormented howls of urban alienation that made him one of the leading figures of 1970s New American Cinema. Specializing in the investigation of damaged souls pushed to shocking extremes in their quest for redemption, he has experimented with a range of styles, genres and tones – ranging from deeply serious to coolly ironic to self-consciously sleazy – in daring works such as HARDCORE, MISHIMA: A LIFE IN FOUR CHAPTERS, and AUTOFOCUS. Schrader's films grapple with weighty themes such as faith, violence, sin and redemption and are a fascinating look at his personal obsessions.
