In this ultimate drone buying guide, you'll see that the DJI Mini 4k video drone is virtually the same as DJI's Mini 2 SE, except it films in ultra HD 4k at 30 frames per second, instead of 2.7k at 30 frames per second or quad HD on the Mini 2 SE. It's not a 60fps drone, but it does have the best drone image quality of any entry-level drone under £300.
It also features 3-axis gimbal stabilization, 31 minutes of filming, which is more like 18-22 when you take into account the wind and how fast you're flying, 10km video transmission, level 5 wind resistance, which is up to 19-24 miles is per hour and automatic return home.
Why is the DJI Mini 4k not on the DJI website? There's no response from DJI, but it's only available from Amazon for £269 or $299. (links above)
There are features that this best beginner drone does not have. There are no sensors for obstacle avoidance, the gimbal doesn't rotate vertically and only takes horizontal images and there's no tracking or tracking either, although there are QuickShots such as Dronie, Rocket, Circle, Helix and Boomerang, for taking tracking shots. I show you how to use QuickShots with the DJI Fly app and a DJI drone.
The DJI Mini 4k uses the RC-N1c remote control and connects to a phone here. Additional batteries for the DJI Mini 2, Mini 2 SE or the Mini 4k can be purchased for around £60 or $80.
Press the H or pause button once and the drone will pause in flight, while a long press activates RTH or returns to the start button. If the drone is more than 20 meters away, pressing it will return the drone to where it started.
There are 3 flight modes: Sport mode is the fastest, with Normal and Cine the slowest speed.
At 20% battery level the remote controller will start beeping loudly to let you know the battery is low, and at 10% battery level the drone will return to home and land.
A very interesting setting is the ability to switch the gimbal from tracking mode to FPV in the DJI Fly app. First Person View mode unlocks the gimbal axis to move with the drone.
You can record 12mp, in JPEG and RAW, and you can take single shots, 3 photos in brackets for HDR images and timed photos from 2-60 seconds.
In the UK, if your drone is not a toy and has a camera, you will need an annual Operator ID from the CAA, which costs £11.13 per year. It is recommended that you obtain a free Flyer ID at the same time. There is an online test with 40 questions.
