Artificial intelligence is changing healthcare. It promises better diagnoses and fewer errors, all in less time. While some associate AI with a terrifying dystopian future, many doctors see it as a source of support.

To help them care for patients, doctors program apps and provide AI with data. At the Charité Hospital in Berlin, Professor Surjo Soekadar investigates how neurotechnology can support paralysis patients in their daily lives, for example through assistance systems controlled by their thoughts.

This could offer hope to people like Guido Schule and Anne Nitzer. Nitzer suffered a stroke shortly after the birth of her second child and has since been unable to move or speak, even though she is fully conscious.

At the Vienna General Hospital (AKH), Professor Ursula Schmidt-Erfurth has already developed an AI-based diagnostic tool that has been licensed for use. Today, she investigates how AI can improve both the diagnosis and treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This chronic eye disease can lead to vision loss – even with treatment. This is a fate that awaits Oskar Zlamala. But since the retiree started treatment at AKH Vienna, he hopes it will be possible to halt the progression of his disease.

Computer scientists and physicians are also working together to help Essen University Hospital go digital. Dr. Felix Nensa and Professor Arzu Oezcelik improve care for transplant patients using artificial intelligence. AI can calculate the size of organs, such as the liver, much more accurately and quickly than humans – thereby improving the outcomes and safety of the procedure.
