Health information exchange (HIE) is the electronic transfer of healthcare-related data between medical institutions, health information organizations (companies that oversee and manage the exchange of this data), and government agencies according to national standards.

HIE allows physicians, nurses, pharmacists, other health care providers and patients to appropriately access and securely share a patient's vital medical information electronically, improving the speed, quality, safety and cost of patient care.

HIE helps facilitate coordinated patient care, reduce duplicate treatments and prevent costly errors.
