Dunkelflaute is a German word – literally 'dark-silence' and is used to describe the fear of inadequate electricity supply when there is no sun and no wind.
Many fossil fuel advocates suffer from severe Dunkelflaute, believing that we need backup fossil fuel generators on standby for every wind turbine or solar panel.
That's obviously not true, but I do think it would be very helpful for energy professionals to start using the term in a more practical and less emotional way when discussing how to integrate a more variable electricity supply and maintain reliability. So we could say "what is the longest Dunkelflaute we should plan", and that would help us figure out the energy storage requirements.
