About this course
In this education and teacher training we look for effective teaching methods for biology. We highlight approaches that are proven to be effective and show you how to easily implement them. We also give you the opportunity to reflect on your own teaching experience, exchange ideas and share challenges with other students in the course.
We'll start by looking at the most common method of teaching science: the lecture. We discuss what the teaching method does well and look at data that illustrates when it is less effective. You'll hear highly successful teachers talk about their teaching experiences and how they've adjusted their teaching time to more actively engage students. We explore creating learning objectives and how they can be used to communicate your expectations to students. You practice writing your own learning objectives and see how these can streamline exam construction. We'll look at different ways to integrate active learning into class, discuss how active learning strategies support your learning goals, and let you practice developing learning activities for biology topics you find difficult to teach.
Finally, we'll look at how to use tools for student learning outside of class, and how to know that your students have successfully learned from activities inside and outside of class.
Our course is intended for instructors, or instructors-to-be, of biology at the undergraduate level. High school instructors of AP Biology, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students looking ahead to teaching should find the course useful. The course can serve as a means of professional development. There are no prerequisites, although it is highly recommended to first successfully complete a biology course at a university.
