Energy saving tips/simple winter living hacks that anyone can do to stay warm and save money on electricity by lowering your electric bill. Here are some tips to help you save energy, money and do your bit for the environment.
Try these simple, cheap or free energy saving tips
Oven
Keep your oven clean, lubricated and properly adjusted with annual maintenance. When your oven is operating optimally, it uses less energy and your operating costs are lower.
Clean or replace the filter every 1-2 months – a dirty filter reduces airflow and forces the furnace to run longer to heat your home.
Consider purchasing a new ENERGY STAR® qualified furnace with a variable speed motor. The average home can save up to $530 annually in natural gas and electricity costs when upgrading from a standard 60% efficiency natural gas furnace to a 95% efficiency furnace with a high-efficiency, variable-speed motor.
Thermostat
Lower your thermostat by 4 – 5 degrees Celsius
(7 – 9 degrees Fahrenheit) while you sleep at night and when no one is home Install a programmable thermostat. For every degree Celsius you lower the thermostat, you can save 2% on your heating bill. With a programmable thermostat that consistently turns the heating down when you don't need it, you can save up to €56 per year!
The laundry
Switch to cold when you do laundry. 85 – 90% of the energy used to wash your clothes is used to heat the water. By turning the dial on your washing machine to cold, you help the environment, save energy and save money.
Wash full loads.
Then choose a washing machine with a front loader. A front-loading washing machine not only saves water, but also energy. It uses about 40% less water and about 50% less energy.
Weather stripping
Draft strips form a barrier between the fixed and movable parts of doors and windows. Apply weather stripping to operable windows, exterior doors, garage doors and doors leading to the attic.
windows, door frames, sills and joints
Apply a sealant or sealant around windows, door frames, sills and joints. On a windy day, look for leaks or use a few incense sticks to help identify leaks around windows, electrical outlets, vents and exterior doors. Also look for spider webs: if there is a web, there is a draft.
Use plastic window covers to prevent heat loss.
Keep return air vents and heating vents away from furniture, rugs and curtains so they don't hinder the flow of heat through your home.
Cellar
If you have an unfinished basement or crawl space, check for leaks by looking for spider webs. If there is a web, there is a draft. A large amount of heat is also lost in an uninsulated basement.
Add insulation to basement walls.

Curtains and blinds
On sunny days, open the south-facing curtains and let the sun in, a natural heat source. If you have large windows that do not receive direct sun, keep the curtains closed.
Close your curtains and blinds at night.
Pipes, ducts, fans and vents
Seal gaps around pipes, ducts, fans and vents that pass through walls, ceilings and floors from heated to unheated areas.
Shower heads and taps
Install low-flow shower heads and faucets
A dishwasher
Always wash a full load in your dishwasher and let your dishes air dry on the /"energy saving/" setting.
Garage
Turn on the heating just before use, save by not heating it continuously.
Wooden fireplace
Close the damper to prevent warm air from escaping through the chimney and make sure the damper fits properly.
