Couchsurfing is more than a way to travel on a budget. It’s a way to get local insights that aren’t available in guidebooks and online resources. In my opinion, there’s nothing better than getting the local experience while traveling. Yes, landmarks make places famous, but with a little effort, you can discover hidden gems that will make your visit truly special.

I have hosted dozens of couchsurfers and never felt like they wanted to stay with me to save money. They are always the type of travelers who want to visit a destination to experience the culture and authentic vibe of the city. This is the type of trip that becomes an enriching life experience that allows you to grow.

When traveling for long periods of time, budgeting is a big factor, but it’s challenges like these that open the door to the possibility of more meaningful experiences. I’ve always thought that traveling is a form of education, like a world university. You gain so many skills that aren’t in the textbooks. You face many challenges that lead to personal growth.

If you want to stand in line or in the crowd to get that iconic photo you’ve seen a million times, go for it. Everyone has different reasons for traveling and different travel styles. I can’t blame you for any of these things. BUT… if you want to experience something unique, which few visitors do, you should consider Couchsurfing.

Couchsurfers are usually like-minded people who want to help you get the most out of your travel experience, because they themselves have received the same treatment during their travels.

Things to consider while couchsurfing: Find a way to give back to your hosts. After all, they are opening their home to complete strangers. Little things like a gift from home are great ways to get over that initial awkwardness and make it feel like you’ve been friends for a long time. Maybe you can cook them a meal from home. Whatever it is, just do something. Definitely don’t treat this exchange like a hotel where you check in, travel, sleep, and check out. Also, be respectful of your host and their home. Don’t make a mess or be noisy.

That said, I have never had a negative experience with Couchsurfing. Maybe a few strange moments, but never a negative experience.
