Energy flows and matter recycles in ecosystems, with the sun as the primary energy source. As primary producers, plants convert sunlight into biomolecules that store energy. Consumers, like animals, obtain energy by eating plants or other animals. Decomposers break down dead organisms and recycle matter and nutrients. Energy is conserved, but often released as heat, as matter continually circulates through the ecosystem.
