There is an urgent and growing need for “actionable” information about the planet; information that governments, policymakers, businesses, and citizens can use to make effective decisions about our future. The most valuable form of actionable information is predictions. We outline Microsoft’s research program that is developing new science to enable better predictions and provide actionable information about the future of our world, for the world. We present a series of new scientific models, methods, and tools that we have developed, each of which represents a substantial step forward in terms of the ability to generate useful, defensible, predictive models of key planetary components (e.g., future climate, food, carbon, disease). Combined, they provide a radically new prediction engine for generating and sharing actionable information about the planet.
