/"AI in Healthcare – Balancing Risk and Opportunity/" is presented by Dr. Lindsey Jarrett, vice president of Ethical AI Services at the Center for Practical Bioethics.

Technology is developing at a rapid pace in what can seem like every sector of our lives, and healthcare is not exempt. In healthcare environments, AI helps detect, predict and monitor health status, conditions and behavior and aids in processes related to direct healthcare delivery. Amid the excitement, concerns are also growing about how AI could pose significant potential risks and harms to healthcare systems. How should organizations, regulators, software vendors, and individual practitioners respond to these risks while continuing to use and appreciate the benefits of these technologies? There is an urgent need for a comprehensive AI solution as physicians and healthcare leaders are determined to realize the benefits and efficiencies of these technologies now. Yet standard processes that provide human touchpoints, thoughtful considerations, and the application of ethical principles when using algorithms are often underutilized or completely absent. Due to the lack of these processes and limited regulatory guidance, healthcare organizations are now working to fill the gap so they can use these tools responsibly. This talk provides practical guidance on how to start creating a system for the ethical use of AI so that healthcare organizations can mitigate the risks of AI and deploy it as a useful tool.
