Electronic health record interoperability is the ability of different hospital systems and physician practices to share patient data.

Examples of patient data include medical history, physical examination findings, CT/MRI images and laboratory values.

The US government measured the interoperability of hospitals in major cities and rated it based on the percentage of hospitals that shared patient data.

Some findings:
Cleveland 78% of hospitals share patient data
Miami 77%
Dallas 60%
New York City 59%
Chicago 58%
Boston 50%
Washington DC 44%
Los Angeles 41%
Philadelphia 35%

Some hospitals and physician practices don't share data, NOT because of technology challenges, but rather because they simply don't WANT to.

Hear a true story of a 500-physician practice that stopped sharing CT images for free with a local hospital and instead instructed patients to copy images to a CD to take with them to the hospital.
