To see how they could help seniors, SeniorLiving.org wanted to try out some home-delivered meal kits. We list the pros and cons, the latest prices and explain who can benefit most from a Home Chef subscription.
Home Chef says it delivers three million pre-portioned meals to its subscribers every month. The Chicago-based company was bought out by Kroger's in 2018, so you can buy Home Chef kits at grocery stores like Kroger's and Ralph's.
When signing up on their website, they asked me not only what I liked to eat, but also what I wanted to avoid, such as mushrooms, so they wouldn't show me dishes with that ingredient. Nice gesture. I went with their Fresh and Easy plan but got to choose one of the meals offered that week.
I examined the available dishes and selected four. The more difficult options are labeled Culinary Collection, but you can also opt for '15-minute meal kits', 'Easy Prep meal kits' or even Entrée Salads. Some kits even come with their own pan, making meal prep and cleanup easier.
The filters make it easy to choose between carbohydrate-conscious, calorie-conscious, thirty minutes or less and vegetarian options.
One of the best features of Home Chef is that you can swap proteins for a particular recipe. For example, instead of beef, you can upgrade to chopped or substitute chicken or even plant-based proteins like the Impossible Burger.
For each dish I was able to get enough for 2 to 6 servings. I was able to see the ingredients, step-by-step instructions with illustrations, full calorie counts and nutritional information. Another great option is a meal designed for grilling.
When the Home Chef shipment arrived, the ingredients were on time, safely packaged and well insulated. Unlike other meal kits, the ingredients for each of the four recipes were well separated. The cards even suggested the order in which the dishes should be made so that the ingredients do not spoil.
The four dishes I chose are:
Shrimp paella
Chipotle BBQ Chicken Thigh Lettuce Wrap
Smoky BBQ Bacon Chicken Thigh Tacos
Ginger steak and peppers with roasted peanuts
