Hanging system:
The frame and body of a car are not mounted directly to the front and rear axles, but via some form of springs and shock absorbers. This is done to dampen road shocks. The transferred parts that perform this function are called a suspension system.

The suspension system therefore includes springs, shock absorbers and mountings. The suspension system of a motor vehicle is divided into rear suspension and front suspension.

Types of hanging systems:

Independent Suspension: In this type of suspension, each front wheel is independently supported by a coil, torsion bar or leaf spring. Most passenger cars now use independent front suspension, with the coil spring system being the most common.

Types of independent suspension:
1. Macpherson strut suspension
2. Double wishbone suspension
3. Multilink suspension
4. Wishbone suspension

Non-independent or rigid axle suspension: This type of suspension was used universally before the introduction of independent front suspension. Two longitudinal leaf springs can be used, as shown in the figure, or transverse springs, usually in combination with shock absorbers. These assemblies are mounted in the same manner as the rear leaf spring suspensions.

Types of non-independent or rigid axle suspension:
1. Leaf suspension with solid axle
2. Solid shaft spring

Other suspension types:
1. Air suspension
2. Hydroelastic suspension
