How electric cars reduce pollution?

Today, the transportation sector is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change in Minnesota, accounting for 25% of the state's greenhouse gas emissions. Vehicle exhaust fumes not only stink, but are also deadly. Pollution from cars, trucks, planes, trains and boats has serious consequences for public health and our climate.

Pollutants from vehicle exhaust cover a wide range, from particulate matter, volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides to other greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide.

While their names may sound innocuous, their impact on human health when inhaled regularly is disastrous. PM2.5 alone – particles made up of fine, inhalable particles about 30 times smaller than the hair on your head – causes at least 100,000 premature deaths every year in the United States.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the Minnesota Department of Health estimate that particulate matter and ozone pollution are responsible for 2,000 to 4,000 deaths per year in Minnesota.

Fortunately, electric vehicles have little or no tailpipe emissions and are a versatile method to decarbonize our economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Thanks to decades of work by Fresh Energy and its partners, Minnesota is making tremendous progress, both in producing cleaner electricity that emits fewer greenhouse gases and in powering end-use sectors like transportation.

By encouraging broader adoption of electric vehicles alongside active transportation such as walking and biking, and increasing investments in electrified transportation, Minnesota is taking critical steps to meet its greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals. At the same time, these measures will help our state improve air quality and build healthier communities, especially those that experience higher levels of traffic-related air pollution.

In 2016, transportation displaced the electric power industry and power generation from its long reign as the leading source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. While Minnesota's actions to date to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and slow the climate crisis are commendable, it is clear from the chart below that there is plenty of room for growth.
