OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) is a link-state routing protocol used within IP networks and is designed to efficiently determine the best path for routing IP packets. OSPF routers exchange information about the network's topology using Link State Advertising (LSAs), which describe their directly connected links and associated costs. Initially, routers discover their neighbors through Hello packets and establish adjacent connections to those neighbors. Once adjacent connections are established, routers exchange their connection status information periodically or when changes occur. Each router then independently calculates the shortest path tree using the Dijkstra algorithm based on received LSAs, determining the best routes to each network. OSPF supports multiple areas to scale larger networks, with Area Border Routers (ABRs) connecting different OSPF areas, aggregating routes to reduce the size of routing tables. Within an area, a Designated Router (DR) and Backup Designated Router (BDR) are chosen to reduce the amount of OSPF traffic by aggregating updates. OSPF uses connection cost metrics, typically derived from bandwidth, to select the shortest path to a destination. It is widely used in large enterprise networks and ISPs due to its efficiency, scalability and support for hierarchical design.
