Even though peacocks appear very bright in color, they are not as bright as they look. Peacocks are actually brown and their color often changes due to the reflection of light. That is the secret of their beautifully colorful feathers. Each part of a peacock's feather changes color when light hits it from different angles.

Getting started with drawing tutorials

The best way to get students off to a good start with a drawing lesson is to show them how to use guide lines as a reference point.

You may have noticed that all of the tutorials on this site have a dotted line running through the center of each step, both horizontally and vertically. If students create their own centered lines on their own paper before drawing, they can easily follow them.

For example, as you can see in Step 1 below, the U shape for the peacock belly is centered on the vertical line of the paper and just slightly down from the horizontal line. It's important to get that shape the right size and place before adding the curve of the peacock's head and neck above.

Drawing skills are all about getting the size and placement of lines on paper, so having a visual reference point to get started will always help anyone learn to work a little more accurately.

Does this mean students should grab a ruler and draw a thick line down the center of their paper before starting? Thank God, no, please not! That will most likely be difficult to erase and distract from finished art. No, just fold the sheet of paper in half in both directions, make a crease and unfold it. The great thing is that by the time the drawing is finished and colored, the wrinkles will disappear.
