Want to book a trip last minute? Today I'm sharing my top tips on how to find cheap hotels last minute so you can get great hotels at great prices!

1. First, you need to decide where you want to stay. This sounds obvious, but you need to jump online and find the best neighborhoods for your chosen destination. Keep in mind what you are looking for.

In Bangkok for example. Use blogs, guides and Google Maps to find the best areas to stay. I find the TripAdvisor forums super helpful with this. If you're looking for a central location with bars and cheap hostels, the Old Town is the place for you. If you want a more residential hotel with good connections to the city, look for a hotel along the BTS line. If you want plenty of choice of restaurants, you can think of Siam, while those looking for a romantic stay can look closer to the river. Either way, deciding where to start is your first step.

2. Then go to a hotel comparison website. We use booking.com for the US or Europe and Yahoo for Asia just because we find the prices cheaper. Don't forget to filter your results – and it helps to adjust the Price per night column to suit your own budget.

3. Once you've picked a handful of hotels you like, do a few more things. First you compare prices on several comparison websites and on the hotel's website. Make sure you create an account with the comparison websites, they often offer better rates for members and becoming a member is generally free.

5. Check out Expedia – We find that Expedia can often offer very good deals when booking a last-minute deal. Check out their last minute and deals tab for great rates on many hotels.

4. You're also going to take a look at the hotel's website to see if they have membership cards that offer discounts or perks. Be sure to check out the Offers tab, if available. Hotels can offer last-minute booking options.

5. Then you contact your hotel via Facebook and ask where it is best to book accommodation. Often small hotels (especially in Asia) prefer that you book directly. This is a great way to save, but make sure you research the hotel on TripAdvisor and other review websites to make sure they are legit.

6. Download the App – For larger chains like Marriott, Hyatt and Hilton, you can download a hotel app and collect points to use on hotel bookings. In addition, you are often also given room selection preferences.

7. Always ask for a corner room if possible. You will often find that there is more space and more light in these rooms.

8. Take advantage of other websites and apps. HotelTonight and Lastminute.com both offer great deals and can browse last minute deals for you in your chosen destination. HotelQuickly is also an app that's great for people traveling around Asia, offering the best deals a few days before your stay.

9. Use the secret deals. Some websites, such as Lastminute.com, offer a secret hotel deal. You can choose the hotel's rating and learn about the general area, but you won't know the name of the hotel until you book it. This is one way hotels fill their rooms, but you can also get a lot by doing this.

10. Don't forget coupons. In the UK we always use HotUKDeals or Groupon, but every country has a version of these types of websites, collecting and sharing popular coupons for different retailers or companies. If you're booking through a hotel chain or comparison website, make sure you search Google for your destination and the word 'coupons' to check if any offers are available.

11. Don't forget to use TopCashBack. When we book a trip, we book our flights and hotel via Topcashback. You will receive a small amount of money or a percentage of your amount, which can increase.

12. Check out roomer – we haven't used this service yet but are looking forward to trying it out. Basically you book a room that someone else has already booked, but which is non-refundable. So the original booker gets some money back, but you also get a room at a discount.
