The process of developing a biotechnology education program at your school can take many forms. One successful strategy is to base program development on skills used in the biotechnology industry. A skills-based approach is best implemented when the skills can be clearly identified and assessed by both the teacher and the students. The experiments and/or activities used should be tailored to the skills to be mastered and organized so that they build on each other, reinforcing and extending the use of such skills. Equipment and supplies can be added as funds become available, but initial implementation can occur with minimal equipment. A capstone project will be presented as a way to provide students with a method to gain experience and mastery during independent laboratory work. Mentoring by more experienced group members is another strategy that working laboratories use to learn skills in the academic and industrial laboratory environment and is discussed as a complementary strategy.

Presenter J. Kirk Brown is a nationally certified teacher with extensive experience teaching in high schools and colleges. Kirk has been teaching at Tracy High School in Tracy, CA for over 24 years and currently serves as Science Department Chair.
