Yoga sequences in our personal practice and in our classes are a constantly evolving process influenced by a multitude of experiences, lessons and changes, both physical and non-physical.
One of the most helpful things about learning a sequence is knowing it in your body; your body remembers all the little micro movements, activations and inner sensations of every pose and transition. When we get to this level of knowing a sequence, the sequence itself becomes second nature and you have a multi-layered library of experiences to share in your classroom.
One thing I like to do to fine-tune my sequences and cueing is to nerd it out on the mat!
A few basic tips you can experiment with:
– Create a simple sequence; don't make it complicated.
– Practice this sequence every day for at least two weeks, even if only for a short period of time.
– Focus on a different aspect or layer in each practice; for example, the foundations, activations, alignments or breath flow.
– Take notes during or immediately after the exercise; write down what you have learned and discovered. Get curious!
I hope this was helpful and that you make some fun, new discoveries as you go through this process of your yoga teaching journey!
Love,
Meghan
