What are effective ways to make friends as an adult?

Try to tap into your existing network first. Even if you don’t have many, if any, friends you talk to regularly these days, chances are you still have some old connections you haven’t spoken to in a while. So don’t be afraid to reach out, either by calling them up or sending them a message via text or social media. If they don’t get back to you, you’re no worse off than you were before you tried to reach out, and if they do, you have a whole new opportunity to connect. Along the same lines, if you have a spouse or significant other, ask if they have any old friends you could connect with together.

Next, try something a little more structured. In a recent study, sociologists gathered data from 91 countries representing 2/3 of the world’s population. They concluded that Denmark has the happiest people in the world. Why is that? It might have something to do with the fact that 92% of Danes are members of some group, ranging from sports to cultural interests. To avoid loneliness, we need to pursue an active social life, maintain friendships, and maintain stable relationships. With this in mind, you could enroll in adult classes to try and learn something you’ve never had time for before.

Along these lines, if you have children, creating structured activities for them and their friends can help you meet the parents of some of their friends. You may even find a few you want to talk to further.

Some final other options here would be to take a chance to travel, volunteer, or use a service like the app and website, Meetup. Yes, many of these suggestions seem like a fair amount of work, and they are, but here’s the thing, having a large and robust network of good friends makes the work and occasional awkwardness of meeting new people worth it.

So there are some ideas on how to expand your social network in real life and make new friends. But once you’ve done that, the question is: how do you keep them?

First of all, a point that may seem obvious, but is still worth mentioning: be kind.
No one likes a mean person. Resonating with other people is less about you and more about focusing on them. In other words, don’t try to be interesting, try to be interested. Being nice can be as easy as listening to people and asking them to tell you more.

Also consider giving meaningful gifts to those you care about and doing random acts of kindness to show that you are thoughtful. Be selfless in trying to give more than you receive, without burning yourself out of course.

The next step is to be vulnerable without crossing the line and sharing your whole life.
life story in one go. Try to open up to other people, no strong friendship is ever based on just talking about the weather.

So be yourself, be honest about who you are, be vulnerable with your emotions without being dramatic and don't be ashamed of your own interests. You have to like yourself and have confidence in yourself first, otherwise you are projecting negative energy onto other people.
