In many Middle Eastern countries, Zanzibar, Mexico and Vietnam, you not only have to pay for an item, but also negotiate a fair price for goods and services.

It can be annoying, tiring and time consuming.
Below you will find a collection of the best haggling tips to help you haggle like a pro.

Use local language
Speaking the local language shows that you care about the local people and culture.

Wear a smile
Smile. It costs you nothing. A smile on your face makes you instantly friendlier and more open.

Do your research
If you have your heart set on something you really want to buy, ask locals for a price reference. You can learn it from taxi drivers, tour guides, accommodation staff, bartenders…

Have a poker face
Don't show that you're interested in something. Don't show that you really want to buy something.

Don't say the price first
This is perhaps the most important negotiation tip there is. Don't say the price first. Always wait for the seller to tell you how much something costs.

Take your time
The more time you are willing to invest in the negotiation process, the more respect you will earn and the lower your price can be.

It's a chess game, but not poker
It is a game of moves and countermoves, but once it is done, you cannot call it a bluff. Be respectful and keep your word.
