How to properly store things for long-term storage to prevent pests

When you think of long-term storage units, you don't usually think about pests, especially if you keep your unit clean, but there are some factors outside of your control that can cause pest problems when using long-term storage units. This post is all about how to properly store things in long-term storage units and how to keep your belongings pest-free and avoid pests.

You may store your belongings properly, but that doesn't mean others do the same

One of the main causes of pest spread is when areas are close together. For example, student rooms, apartment complexes, commercial properties that are close to each other, such as shopping centers, and of course storage spaces.

One common factor among all of these things is that even if you don't have pest problems, your neighbors might. This makes you susceptible to pests that can easily move into your belongings and cause problems for you.

Many long-term storage facilities do not focus on pest control for their customers and that burden often falls on your shoulders. That means if you don't do it, a lot of other people with units probably don't either.

This can cause pest problems to spread quickly from unit to unit. Again, this leads to why it is so important for you to take personal responsibility for keeping your unit pest-free and protecting your belongings for long-term storage.

Do not store food for long periods of time to avoid pests

Most people probably don't store food in long storage spaces, but it can certainly happen from time to time. It can also happen unconsciously when you move.

Food can often end up in moving boxes and can be missed and end up in your long-term storage without you even realizing it. This can lead to many pest problems because the food attracts pests.

If you decide to store food for an extended period of time, make sure it is in tightly sealed containers. Cardboard boxes are not enough. Don't leave any chance of easy access to food sources or you will attract more pests.

Make sure your clothes and beds are clean and properly locked

Another area you may not have considered is ensuring that clothing, beds or furniture are properly cleaned and sealed during storage. Dirty clothing, furniture or beds can be a major attraction for pests.

Dirty clothing and furniture can attract pests through odors and as a food source. Various pests feed on dead skin cells, oils and hair, among other things.

These items do not necessarily have to be very dirty. Just a few skin cells or oils from your skin won't be easily noticed, but for pests these can be a big problem.

It is important to vacuum your furniture and beds and put covers on them if possible. Furniture may be a bit more difficult to make, but you can purchase a simple mattress cover to prevent the spread of things like bed bugs or fabric pests.

Bed bugs are a pest that is very hardy and moves from unit to unit. Purchasing a mattress protector can help prevent the spread of bed bugs and prevent pest problems when you move your furniture from your storage unit back into your home. There are a few companies that make covers specifically designed to eliminate possible entry of bed bugs.

Follow these pest control tips and you can better protect your belongings in long-term storage units.
