#1. Away with the pleasantries!
People may also start their presentations and speeches with boring small talk. If you want to distract your audience from their iPhones and Blackberries, you need to grab their attention, so skip the subtleties and get them immediately involved in what you're saying.
#2. Start with a bang!
Do something different when you start your speech. I don't mean anything crazy, so no big stunts! What I mean is start with something that captures the imagination. Start with a fact, a number, a quote, a story, maybe a piece of video or a bit of music; something that will truly get them engaged. You want people to realize that you've started and to give you the attention you deserve.
