Last year, Zomato used a clever psychological strategy known as 'the nudge/' to save 1.2 million kilos of single-use cutlery. If you placed a food order on the platform in August 2021, you may have come across a message that read: /"Do not send cutlery, tissues and straws./" To receive cutlery, you had to actively select the option, essentially /"to register./"

Initially, this idea seemed promising, but Zomato discovered that it did not have the desired impact. Despite 90% of customers in a survey claiming they didn't want plastic cutlery, most people simply stuck with the standard option and received cutlery automatically.

Zomato's solution was simple but effective: they changed the default option to /"no cutlery./" Now if customers wanted cutlery, they had to go to the trouble of checking the box and actively using /"opt-in./" . Unsurprisingly, this A subtle change to the default option had a huge impact, resulting in significant plastic savings.

It is worth noting that this concept is not an original revelation. Credit for this nudge strategy goes to behavioral economists Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein, who introduced the theory in 2008. They suggested that by mapping choices correctly, you can encourage people to make better decisions – a gentle nudge, so to speak.
