During 2022, I was running a cell phone repair business on a college campus. Today I'll describe how I started repairing Apple iPhones as a business, what I needed to invest in to start repairs, and what lessons I learned from this business venture.

Why I Started an iPhone Repair Business as a Side Hustle:
Starting an iPhone repair business seemed obvious to me at the time. First of all, I was very passionate about repairing electronics as a hobby, so it was naturally exciting for me to be able to do a side job that involved a hobby. If I could generate $50-100 per repair I could scale this up and make a few hundred dollars a week which would be comparable to a part time job and I would be doing something I really enjoyed

1️⃣ Acquire the skills needed to make repairs:
I started repairing cracked, dented, and broken iPhone SEs and other older iPhones I bought on eBay. I would take these broken screens and trade them for working, new screens and then relist them on Facebook Marketplace and eBay. This was a great way to first gain confidence in iPhone repairs and to practice on iPhones where the stakes weren't high if you completely broke the phone.

2️⃣ Essential tools, equipment and start-up costs:
There are many tools and startup costs to consider before taking the plunge into running a business. Some are nice to have, but there are also other tools and costs that are essential to making a repair efficiently and effectively, depending on the direction you want to take your business.

3️⃣ Marketing and attracting customers:
Marketing can be done online or offline, using social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube. But creating visuals, such as good posters, and presenting them to the community is also very important.

4️⃣ Pricing strategies and business operations:
It is important to have a good setup/plan for where to meet your customers when it comes to repairs to ensure customer satisfaction. I wanted to promote my services to students and offer cheap, fast and reliable repairs. For that reason, I wanted to meet at a public location on campus, such as the library, to do my repairs. I also tried to price my repairs in a way that would really attract students to do business with me.

5️⃣ Lessons learned from working with clients:
When running a business you encounter many obstacles and make mistakes. This is no different in the mobile phone repair industry. Sometimes you are forced to make stressful decisions in front of a customer and need to resolve them. These prove to be lessons that will last a lifetime.
