The amendments proposed by Minister Darragh O'Brien also cover rules on foreign donations, disinformation and other transparency requirements for political parties, citing fears of Russian interference in the Irish election.

O'Brien said in an interview with the Independent on Monday that the laws will further protect Ireland's democratic system "given the growing threat of cyber warfare targeting free countries", and that a newly established Electoral Commission will oversee compliance with the laws.

It is unclear what percentage or amount of political donations are currently paid to political parties or individuals using a cryptocurrency. Cointelegraph reached out to Minister O’Brien and the Standards In Public Office Commission for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.

O'Brien launched his campaign to reform the laws in January 2022. He assembled a task force of political scientists and legal experts to study the new election laws, amid concerns about the escalating war between Russia and Ukraine.

The task force recommended a series of measures that would create a “legal and digital bulwark” against interference in the country’s elections, including requiring parties to provide streamlined accounting reporting and declarations of compliance with new political financing laws.

The ban on crypto political donations isn’t unheard of: The state of California banned the practice in 2018, citing transparency issues and cryptocurrencies being “difficult to trace.” Three other U.S. states, including Oregon, Michigan and North Carolina, also have laws against the use of cryptocurrencies in campaign financing, according to data from Multistate.
