In his lecture, Prof. Dr. Vandervoort provides a snapshot of how mobile technology, wireless sensors and social networks can transform the current healthcare system towards a patient-driven model. Prof. Dr. Vandervoort is a cardiologist at the Oost Limburg Hospital. He is one of the initiators of the Mobile Health Unit, an interdisciplinary research collaboration between Hasselt University, Oost Limburg Hospital and Jessa Hospital. Their vision is to apply common technologies, such as smartphones, internet and laptops, in healthcare.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine in-depth discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are called TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidelines for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
