#1. Always tell someone you trust where you are going for a walk! Whether that is a roommate, friend, family member, etc. For your safety, it is always good that someone knows which route you are on.

#2. Download @alltrails! Although they have a free version, you can research walks, current trial conditions and more. The paid version is worth it! You can “download” the route map offline and use it while walking. It's super useful, especially on trails that aren't very well marked.

#3. Pack lots of water!! Make sure you don't dehydrate along the way. You will have to work hard and replenish water.

#4. Always take a raincoat or light jacket with you, even if it is sunny! The number of times we've gotten soaked when it shouldn't be raining… and often at the top of a hike it can be quite cold and windy, even in summer!

#5. Always carry a first aid kit and other safety supplies! Even though it should be a quick and easy walk, it's better to be prepared than for something to happen and you need it. Many hiking accidents and deaths happen when people are not properly prepared!
