I fully expect you guys to fight me on this. Hence the 'unpopular opinion'. But listen to me!

️ I very rarely book my flight all the way to my final destination. People will tell you it's cheaper, but that's not ALWAYS true. In fact, it is often even more expensive.

There are some advantages to doing it this way, such as not having to deal with luggage (or paying for luggage on each leg) or potentially shorter layovers (sometimes).

But if you can be a little flexible and don't have a lot of luggage, you may be able to find cheaper connections, more budget airline options, AND your layover becomes a weekend getaway.

This is what I like to do:

Search for a one-way flight from 'US' to 'anywhere' on Skyscanner. Suppose I want to fly somewhere in Europe. London, Barcelona and Rome are some of the main hubs where really affordable flights will appear. Fly to Rome, spend a night or two and then fly to my final destination. I've done this in Rome, Barcelona, Singapore, Mexico City, Vancouver.

If you just want to get to your destination, that's fine too, but it can still be cheaper. From London, for example, you can book one of the many affordable budget airlines that only operate in Europe.

Give it a try the next time you're booking a flight, and let me know which way you go on the debate!
