New Privacy and Security Guidelines for Telehealth from OCR:

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has released two essential resources to protect patient data during telehealth sessions.

For healthcare providers: a guide to educating patients about the privacy and security risks of telehealth and how to mitigate them. It covers discussing telehealth options, risks to PHI (Protected Health Information), and provider practices.

‍️ For patients: Tips for maintaining telehealth privacy, such as using private locations, enabling multi-factor authentication, and avoiding public Wi-Fi.

OCR Director Melanie Fontes Rainer highlights telehealth as a tool to improve healthcare access and outcomes, and stresses the importance of understanding cybersecurity to keep health information private.

The full resources are available on HHS in “The Guidance on Educating Patient about Privacy and Security Risks to PHI When Using Remote Communication Technologies for Telehealth.”
