Many of you know that I was on the pill for 11 years and decided to go off it to prepare my body for conception (pregnancy planning). This video will go more into the technical side of what I did when I went off the pill to conceive (the doctors I saw, the tests I had done, and the tracking/charting of my pregnancy while trying to conceive). I will talk more about the emotional side (like how we knew we were ready for a baby) in a future video!

In September 2020 I decided to stop taking the pill. Coming off the pill at 29 years old, I was ready to start the process of getting my natural cycle back on track. At the time I thought I wanted to wait until September (2021) to try to conceive. As you all know, we got pregnant in April 2021, so this plan obviously took a turn and we started trying much earlier than expected.

Immediately after I stopped taking the pill, I made an appointment with my doctor. I had some blood work done to see if I had antibodies (to see if I was up to date on certain vaccines) and Michael and I also did genetic testing. Since it came back that I needed two different vaccine boosters (MMR and Varicella), I was told NOT to try to conceive during this time because they are live vaccines.

Fast forward to October (a month later), and I decided I was officially ready to try. I decided it would be better to start trying then and get pregnant FASTER, than to start trying when we originally said we would and then have that timeline pushed back if we had any issues. There were some bumps in the road during this time, though, as I still had to get my period back! On top of that, my health was deteriorating during this time – I was getting horrible migraines daily and found out I had celiac disease!

There were a few things I did right after I went off the pill. The first was tracking. I started tracking everything about my ovulation and cycle. I took my basal body temperature every morning, used OTC ovulation predictors, used digital OPKs, and checked my cervical fluid daily. My temperatures seemed normal, but I would ovulate about every 40 days (instead of every 28 days). While it wasn’t normal in terms of length, the fact that I was ovulating at all was a good sign. These long ovulation windows lasted until December when I started having all these crazy health issues, causing stress, and causing my period to stop completely. I went back to my gynecologist and was put on a progesterone supplement to “induce” my period.

Around January 2021 I completely stopped gluten, my headaches disappeared and my periods came back naturally. At that time I was given the green light to try it!

One of the biggest questions I got was what days to have sex to get pregnant, and honestly that’s going to be different for everyone because we all ovulate on different days! Once I started hitting that ovulation phase, we started having sex every day during my fertile window.

In the end, all the planning and preparation paid off and we got pregnant that month! After two weeks, my temperature remained elevated instead of dropping, which was a sign of pregnancy! I hope this video was helpful to those who are trying to conceive or just want to know more about their cycle.
