Positive psychology is a strength-based approach that focuses on the positive aspects of a person to promote happiness. We've included two ways to put this into practice below.

1. Find ten minutes, write on pen and paper, or on a computer or even on your phone, to write a biography of your future self, imagining that you are living the life you wanted to live (while being realistic stays!). Focus on the character strengths that led you to that “best” life. It could be years in the future, months or even weeks from now. Then ask yourself how you spend your time in everyday life and how you can change your routine to achieve your "best life."
2. Think of a difficult time or event in your life and write down the positives that came from that event. Make it a story of resilience and describe how that event added meaning to your life. You can choose a few different situations or think deeply about them. This helps build our ability to see the positive in every situation, supporting our overall mental well-being. Join Jeff Robinson, charge nurse at Brockville Mental Health Center, as he guides you through this positive psychology intervention exercise.

Mental hygiene is a form of preventative maintenance and the concept of doing small things every day that support our mental health. We know that we need to shower daily, brush our teeth and sleep well to stay on top of our physical and dental hygiene, but there are currently no guidelines for the daily maintenance of our brains. Spending just 10 minutes a day on mental hygiene, research shows can have a significant impact on improving your overall wellbeing. One of these practices is positive psychology.
