In this video we discuss the principles of bioremediation.

Our environment is polluted by various organic and inorganic compounds, mainly of anthropogenic origin. These pollutants are released from various industries such as automotive, smelters, tanneries, mining, pesticides and many more. Heavy metals such as lead, chromium, mercury, cadmium, copper, nickel, arsenic, zinc, selenium and uranium are emitted from such sources. As well as organic substances such as lignin and polyaromatic hydrocarbon, polychlorinated biphenyl, naphthalene. Such pollutants change the physical and chemical properties of soil and water. This is where the need for bioremedy arises. So let's read on to learn more about the principles of bioremediation.

Treating or remediating such contaminants with conventional methods requires high costs and energy. To tackle the problem of high costs and remediate pollutants at the same time, we need a promising approach: bioremediation. In this process, we use aerobic or anaerobic microorganisms to treat the contaminated site and remove the pollutants from the environment. We can apply these in both in-situ and ex-situ environments and work effectively.

Bioremediation is divided into two categories: microbial bioremediation and phytoremediation. Microbial bioremediation uses different types of microbes (bacteria or fungi) with different techniques to effectively remediate the contaminated site. The phytoremediation technique uses different types of plant species, which can break down the pollutant and accumulate in the body.
