On January 21, 2022, IAVI, together with the Rwandan Ministry of Health, the Rwanda Biomedical Center and Rinda Ubuzima, organized a regional conference on promoting domestic financing for health research and development in the East African Community (EAC).

The meeting was convened to enable EAC Member States to take stock of progress made towards achieving the health research and development financing targets set out in the Bamako Call to Action for Health and other commitments. It also aimed to build a critical mass of champions committed to prioritising domestic health research and development financing in the East African region. It also aimed to develop a mechanism for tracking and reporting on health research and development resources in the EAC.
