Talking, rolling robots are the latest sales tool at a California hardware store.
The bilingual bots can help customers find the most obscure items in the store, easing pressure on busy staff.
STORYLINE:
The robots are coming.
This California hardware store is testing whether new wheeled robots can improve customer service, such as helping a customer find a match for something as simple as a screw.
Four robots are being tested in Orchard Supply Hardware.
The robots, called OSHbots, have two large touch screens on either side and wheels to help them move.
Kyle Nel, executive director of Lowe's Innovation Labs, explains: /"OSHbot is an autonomous navigation robot, and it does a lot. I think what stands out most to people is that it can help you find anything in the store./"
They are equipped with 3D cameras so they can scan and identify items. And customers can search on their screen for items they want to purchase. The robot can then guide them to the aisle where an item is located.
The robots also have a database of the inventory in stock in the store, so they can let customers know if something is out of stock or not.
The robots can speak English and Spanish.
Customers in the store love the robots and take the pressure off the staff.
