This course covers the fundamental aspects of the smart grid and its application to the existing energy system. It introduces state-of-the-art smart grid technologies such as electric vehicles, AC/DC microgrids, energy storage, phasor measurement unit, cybersecurity, etc. In addition, the course covers the trends, modeling, planning, operation and control of energy storage technologies. Furthermore, it discusses the architecture, operation and control strategy of AC, DC and hybrid AC-DC microgrids. This course also emphasizes the integration of renewable energy sources into the current grid and microgrids, and further explores their operation, analysis, management, control, protection and monitoring. Laboratory scale demonstrations have been provided to validate some of the concepts covered in this course.
